Hammocks Beach State park is beginning its annual fall marsh cruises from Sept.24th. The cruises are organized to pay tribute to Chris Campbell, a Navy Seal killed in Afghanistan when his helicopter was shot down. To honor his services and Campbell's last wish, proceeds from the cruises will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Campbell was also known for his dedication as a life guard at Hammocks Beach State Park from 1995 to 1996.According to Sam Bland, the then park superintendent who had hired Campbell as a coastal guard, the Navy SEAL's well known love for the beach, coast and ocean make the marsh cruises a fitting honor for his services to his community and his nation.
The boat cruises for a minimum donation of $5, will take visitors on a one and a half hour tour of the marsh waters surrounding the Park and Swansboro area. The tour offers sightings of wildlife and views of natural scenery along with a narration of the history of the place.
